A beautiful long-bearded portrait
Lot 2962
Licinius I, 308-324. Follis (Bronze, 18 mm, 2.61 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Siscia. Irregular mint, after 320. Helmeted and cuirassed bust of Licinius I. to left; around, imitative legend. Rev. Two captives seated at base of vexillum; around , imitative legend. Cf. RIC 110 (for possible prototype). Somewhat rough and the reverse struck from a worn die, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The coin's style clearly marks it as an unofficial contemporary "barbarous" imitation. It features a bearded portrait resembling Licinius I. The closest official coin is Siscia RIC 110, which depicts Licinius' bust facing right. However, this coin has the bust facing left, making both the legend and the bust mirror images of the original.
